Why does this document exist?
This document exists to tell us about child labor in factories in England in the early 1800s
Why did the author create this piece of work? What is the intent?
The author created this work to show the hard conditions of child laborers, and also to reveal the uncaring attitudes of the owners and managers of the factories. The intent is to spread the word about the awful and brutish conditions of child laborers.
Why did the author choose this particular format?
The author wrote the book this article was included in under a pseudonym, and supposedly from the point of view for a foreigner, to better show an accurate picture of English ways.
Who is the intended audience? Who was the author thinking would receive this?
The intended audience was probably the general populace, and maybe government officials. I think that the author intended for a large audience to read it, to spread the word about the injustice of child labor.
What does the document “say”?
This document “says” that child labor is cruel, hard on the children, inhumane, and ruins childrens futures. It also talks about the uncaring attitude of factory managers and owners.
Can it tell you more than is on the surface?
This article shows the bad sides of child labor, but the factory manager/owner stated that this was sometimes the only way for the poor. Also, I realized that if child labor were abolished, that might actually be a bad thing, because sometimes child labor was the only way for a child.

The artifact relates to economy, because child labor is a good way to increase economic output, but has it's ethical considerations.

My teacher chose it for me, and I spent 30 minutes processing it.

That most people ignore the other side of child labor, and only concentrate on the bad side.

No, because I spent only 30 minutes on it.
