ARTIFACT 3

LUDDITES ON RAMPAGE
Nottingham, October 17-Mysterious brigands under the banner of Ned Ludd laid waste to two large stocking frames in Nottingham last night. It seems that Ned Ludd has been across lots, with more than 100 stocking frames smashed in recent months. Ned Ludd has even pronounced himself King, and is said to be amassing an armed insurrection to upset our government. In recent months, as a troublesome sign of things that will certainly come to pass, innocent people have been massacred. William Brookings, of Nottingham, the owner of numerous factories, was set upon by five wild brigands while riding his horse through Nottingham, and shot several times. John Kent, of Nottingham, a prominent city magistrate, while taking a stroll through his garden, was murderously set upon by two brutes, who murderously bludgeoned him to with hammers. Our Majesty’s Government has been helpless in putting an end to this insurrection. Rewards of thousands of pounds have been put out for the capture of Ned Ludd, and his majesty’s troops have been deployed. Yet the insurrection continues.
